Martel Transportation works closely with Canton Board of Education to establish the routes for the school children. When planning a route, the following is taken into consideration:

Board of Education Policy 3541.311 Town, Private or Unapproved Road Winter conditions Traffic flow Posted speed limit Grade of hills Width of road Geographic location of driveway Age of passenger

Many parents call the Board of Education and Martel to discuss changing the routes to fit their specific needs. Both the Board of Education and Martel Transportation investigate the issues at hand. Either the Business Manager, Jerry Domanico, or Dean Martel, or both, will venture out to examine the area in question to see the location of the home. If the stop is in the middle of a steep hill, the buses will not be able to safely stop during inclement weather. Doing so would not only put the onboarding passenger in danger, it will also endanger every student already on the bus. We live in a geographic area of the United States that has bad weather during the winter season due to freezing rain, sleet, snow and icy conditions. It is extremely important that this major issue is taken into consideration while planning the outes that will be picking up your loved ones. Martel Transportation works alongside the Canton Board of Education to continuously provide the town residents and their children, a high level of service. Once in awhile, it is just impossible to honor certain requests to changes in the established routes due to time constraints that would be imposed by alterations of existing routes such as; traveling down a road for door to door service that is within the specifications set forth as to distance established in the Policy. All of our applicants have to pass Federal and State criminal background checks, fingerprints, pre-employment drug & alcohol testing and motor vehicle background checks. All applicants are verified negative on the CT Website for Sex Offenders click here and any state (if laws permit) that they have been employed and/or had residence in within the past five years. They must pass random selection of drug and alcohol testing throughout their entire length of employment with us. They must pass all laws and regulations set forth that are regulated by Ct State Dept. of Motor Vehicles regarding physical examinations, renewal of CDL licenses.They must also adhere to any new law(s) or amendment(s) made to existing law regarding school bus driver.
